MANDALAS
A mandala (meaning 'circle' in the Sanskrit language) is a typically circular artwork which has been used in various spiritual and religious traditions, often to represent the universe or a sacred space. Mandalas can be created to aid meditation, to focus attention, to relax, or to explore and symbolize one's inner world. Psychoanalyst Carl Jung believed mandalas represented the unconscious, and he used them personally as well as in his therapy practice.
I create beautiful, intricate mandalas which can be customized and dedicated to something or someone significant in your life. You are free to pick the dimensions, art medium (pen, markers or paint), and the color scheme to perfectly suit your home or office. You can then either choose specific symbols that you want included, or have me choose and create relevant symbols for you.
The mandala pictured above was created before the birth of my first child. It is rich in symbology dedicated to, and honoring of, my son. His little footprints are placed in the center of the artwork, while my and my husbands' handprints surround it in the four painted moons. A snake winding around the central pattern shows the year (from the Chinese calendar) that he was born. Fleur-de-lis symbols are a nod to my pregnancy and his birth in New Orleans. My husband's African heritage is shown through abstract pyramids; his upbringing in Texas is represented by longhorn horns, while my Kiwi culture is portrayed through the koru patterns. Nature symbols pervade the mandala, including the lotus flower as a symbol of peace and fortune. Trees, representing the four seasons/ the cycle of life, are placed in the north, south, east, west positions - akin to the healing 'universal circle' from Cherokee tradition. The universe is conveyed through the depiction of sky and stars. While painting, I put positive intentions for my son's birth and life into the work. The song lyrics "I have loved you for a thousand years; I will love you for a thousand more" were added once my son was born and I found myself singing it to him repeatedly. I feel the finished work represents my commitment and dedication to him. (And he seems to enjoy looking at it too!)
